English Translator and Interpreter in Tbilisi

English is the language most Georgian documents travel in, and the one with the most varied acceptance rules: a UK visa center, a US immigration service, a Canadian evaluator and a Dutch university all say "certified translation" and mean four different things. TARGMANEBI prepares Georgian to English translations in the format each recipient actually requires, translates English documents into Georgian for use here, and provides English interpreters for business, legal, medical and official settings.

  • Certified translations with translator's statement for UKVI, USCIS, IRCC and universities; notarized where required.
  • Georgian passports, certificates, diplomas, court and corporate documents into English.
  • English documents into Georgian for PSDA, the Public Registry, banks, courts and notaries.
  • English interpreters for negotiations, signings, hearings, clinics and conferences.

What "certified translation" means for each English-speaking destination

The United Kingdom's UK Visas and Immigration accepts translations that carry a statement confirming that the translation is accurate, the date, the translator's or company's full name and contact details, and a signature; notarization is not required for most visa categories, though some employers and universities ask for it. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services requires a certification of competence and accuracy signed by the translator, and does not require notarization; the same applies to most US universities and state licensing boards, although some courts and DMVs want a notarized version. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires translations by a certified translator or, failing that, a translation accompanied by an affidavit sworn before a notary, which in Georgia means a notarized translation. Australian authorities prefer NAATI-accredited translators for onshore documents, but accept translations from overseas with the translator's details and a stamp.

We prepare each of these formats routinely and tell you which one your recipient needs before you order, so that you do not pay for a notarization that UKVI will not look at or submit a letterhead certification where IRCC requires an affidavit. When a document also needs an apostille (for use in a foreign registry, court or licensing body rather than an immigration service), we plan the order of apostille, translation and notarization as described on our apostille page.

Georgian documents translated into English

The personal documents come first: birth, marriage and divorce certificates for family and settlement visas and citizenship applications; criminal record certificates for work, study and residence; diplomas, supplements, transcripts and school certificates for university admission and credential evaluation by WES, ECE, UK ENIC and similar bodies; medical certificates and vaccination records; bank statements, salary certificates and tax documents for proof of funds; employment contracts and reference letters; property extracts for proof of ties; and court decisions on custody, divorce and name change. The Georgian passport data page is already bilingual and rarely needs translation, but stamps and visas do.

Corporate and legal documents follow: company extracts, charters and resolutions for foreign bank accounts and subsidiaries; contracts and tender documents for foreign counterparties; financial statements and audit reports for parent companies and lenders; court judgments for recognition abroad; and legislation and regulatory texts for foreign investors and advisers. These use the terminology of the official English translations of Georgian legislation and the conventions of international business English, and are reviewed by a second linguist before delivery. Georgian technical, medical and academic texts are translated by specialists in the field, with a native English editor on marketing and published material.

English documents translated into Georgian

Foreign nationals and companies from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Nigeria, the Gulf and everywhere else that issues documents in English need them in Georgian for: marriage registration and residence permits at the Public Service Development Agency (passports, birth certificates, certificates of no impediment, divorce decrees, police certificates); company registration and property transactions at the Public Registry (certificates of incorporation, good standing certificates, articles, board resolutions, powers of attorney); bank onboarding (proof of address, source of funds, corporate documents); court proceedings (evidence, judgments, expert reports); school enrollment (report cards, transfer letters); and recognition of foreign degrees and professional licenses (diplomas and transcripts).

Georgian authorities require these translations to be notarized in Georgia and, for documents issued abroad, the original to carry an apostille or consular legalization. We translate the complete document including the apostille page and any certifications, transliterate names into Georgian according to the conventions the civil registry uses, and bind the translation to a notarized copy so that the client keeps the original. Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian and Gulf documents in English often carry stamps and annotations in Hindi, Urdu, Arabic or other languages; those are translated too, because a Georgian notary will not certify a translation with untranslated text.

English interpreters in Tbilisi and across Georgia

English is the working language of most foreign investment, development projects, international organizations and multinational employers in Georgia, and the language in which most foreigners transact with Georgian notaries, banks and authorities. Our English interpreters work at notarial signings (required by law when a party does not understand Georgian), at PSDA marriage registrations, in court hearings and arbitration, at business negotiations and board meetings, at due diligence sessions and audits, at medical consultations for foreign patients, on construction and energy sites during commissioning and inspections, and at conferences and trainings in simultaneous mode.

Assignments are booked by the hour or day and can be arranged at short notice in Tbilisi for consecutive work; simultaneous conference teams and assignments in the regions need more notice. Remote interpretation by video is available for calls with foreign lawyers, doctors, universities and authorities. The interpreter is briefed with the agenda, documents and terminology beforehand, and can sign an NDA. Details of modes, settings and rates are on our interpretation page.

Translators, editing and turnaround

Georgian to English translation is done by translators with near-native English and reviewed by a native English editor when the text will be published or judged on style (websites, reports, academic articles, marketing); official documents are reviewed for accuracy, names, numbers and completeness. English to Georgian translation is done by native Georgian translators specializing in the document type, with legal, medical, technical and financial texts assigned accordingly. Names follow the passport spelling, which for Georgian names into English means using the Latin form printed in the Georgian passport rather than any of the alternative transliterations.

A standard one or two page document is usually translated and certified or notarized within one working day; larger files and specialist texts are quoted by volume with a firm date. Delivery is by email as PDF for certified translations, and on paper at our office on Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue or by courier for notarized ones. Clients abroad can order remotely with a relative presenting originals to the notary where required.

What to send for an English translation

Send a clear scan or photo of every page, name the institution and country that will receive the translation, and forward any written requirements from them. Questions and answers

Does UKVI require notarized translations?

No. UKVI requires a certified translation with a statement of accuracy, the date and the translator's or company's details and signature. We provide exactly that; notarization is added only if another recipient needs it.

What does USCIS require?

A full English translation with a signed certification that the translator is competent and the translation is accurate. Notarization is not required by USCIS.

What does IRCC (Canada) require?

A translation by a certified translator or, otherwise, a translation with an affidavit sworn before a notary. From Georgia, a notarized translation satisfies this.

Do I need to translate my Georgian passport into English?

Usually not; the data page is bilingual. Stamps, visas and older non-bilingual passports are translated when a recipient asks for travel history.

Can you translate an English document for a Georgian notary or PSDA?

Yes. The translation into Georgian is notarized in Tbilisi and covers the whole document including the apostille and any stamps in other languages.

Do you provide English interpreters for notarial signings?

Yes, in Tbilisi often at short notice. The interpreter's participation is recorded in the notarial act as the law requires.

How fast is a standard document?

Usually within one working day for a one or two page document, certified or notarized. Larger files are quoted with a firm date.
