Traduction assermentée: what francophone authorities accept

In France, a "traduction assermentée" or "certifiée" is made by a translator listed as an expert with a Cour d'appel. Prefectures (for residence permits), mairies (for marriage and civil registration), courts and the Service central d'état civil for naturalization generally require it. The French consulate in Tbilisi, Campus France and most universities accept a Georgian notarized translation for visa and admission purposes, and the consulate can in some cases certify a translation itself. Belgium recognizes translators sworn before Belgian courts and, for documents from abroad, accepts translations legalized in the country of origin for many purposes; Switzerland works canton by canton; Quebec's immigration ministry accepts translations by members of the OTTIAQ or translations accompanied by an affidavit, which from Georgia means a notarized translation.

Campus France, universities and student visas

Georgian students applying through Campus France upload their atestati and annex, unified national examination results, diplomas and transcripts, and language certificates (DELF, DALF, TCF) to the platform, then present them to the consulate for the long-stay student visa. Translations must render the Georgian grading scale and degree titles exactly, since French institutions compare them to the baccalauréat and to the licence-master-doctorat structure. We prepare the student file as a set, with an eye to the Campus France deadlines, and we translate motivation letters and CVs where the student wants them checked rather than written. Belgian universities and Swiss universities (in the francophone cantons) have similar requirements with their own deadlines.

Family, marriage, naturalization and Quebec

Spouse and family reunification visas for France require marriage and birth certificates, criminal record certificates and proof of family ties, apostilled and translated. Marriage at a French mairie requires an apostilled birth certificate and a certificate of marital status (certificat de célibat / de coutume) translated by a sworn translator, with the certificat de coutume often obtained through the Georgian embassy in Paris. Naturalization files require birth certificates of the applicant and parents, marriage certificates, and criminal record certificates translated in sworn form. We prepare these sets with consistent name spellings and explain which items will need the French sworn translator.

Quebec immigration through Arrima and the Programme régulier des travailleurs qualifiés, and federal Canadian programs where the applicant chooses French, require diplomas, transcripts, work experience letters, birth and marriage certificates and police certificates in French with the translator's certification or a notarized affidavit. Our notarized translations satisfy this, and we align the spelling of names with the passport used in the application.

French interpreters and quality

Translations into French are done by native or near-native French translators and reviewed by a second linguist; Georgian names follow the passport spelling, and French accents and ligatures are handled correctly in Georgian renderings of French names. French documents into Georgian (passports, actes de naissance, extraits Kbis, procurations, diplomas, judgments) are translated in full including the apostille and notarized in Tbilisi. Standard documents are usually ready within one working day once the original is available for the notarized copy; full files are quoted as a set with a firm date.

Typical scenarios and where the sworn translator comes in

A Georgian bachelor's graduate applying to a master's program in Lyon through Campus France: the diploma, supplement and atestati are apostilled at PSDA, translated into French and notarized here, uploaded to the Campus France platform and presented at the consulate for the student visa. No French sworn translator is involved. A year later, when the student applies to the prefecture to renew the residence permit and to work, the same documents may be requested in traduction assermentée, and we coordinate that with a French expert translator from the scans already on file.
