Consular certification, traduzione giurata and what Italy accepts

Italian authorities recognize two main routes for a foreign document's translation. The first is certification of conformity by the Italian consulate in the country where the document was issued: the Italian Embassy in Tbilisi can certify that a translation into Italian is a faithful rendering of the apostilled Georgian document, and this "traduzione certificata conforme" is accepted by comuni, Questure, prefetture and universities. The second is a traduzione giurata (asseverata) made in Italy by a translator who swears an oath before a court clerk or a giudice di pace. Which route applies depends on where the document will be used and whether the person is already in Italy.

For visa files submitted in Tbilisi, family reunification (ricongiungimento familiare) documents to be presented to the Sportello Unico, marriage documents for a comune and education documents for the Dichiarazione di Valore, the consular route is standard: we prepare the Italian translation, and the client presents it with the apostilled original to the consular section for certification. For documents needed by someone already in Italy, a traduzione giurata done there is often faster, and we can prepare the translation so that an Italian translator can swear it. Work visas, family reunification and residence

Georgian workers entering Italy under the annual decreto flussi quotas, seasonal agricultural and tourism workers, domestic and care workers (colf and badanti) and their families need criminal record certificates, birth and marriage certificates, passports and, for some categories, diplomas and work experience certificates, apostilled and translated into Italian. Family reunification requires the nulla osta from the Sportello Unico and then a visa file at the embassy with marriage and birth certificates translated and consular-certified; documents proving family ties are examined closely, and inconsistencies in name spelling between certificates are a common cause of delay. Residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) renewals and conversions in Italy, citizenship applications by marriage or residence, and inscription in the Anagrafe all generate further translation needs, usually met by traduzione giurata in Italy.

Study in Italy and the Dichiarazione di Valore

Georgian students applying to Italian universities through Universitaly and the embassy's pre-enrollment procedure need the atestati and annex or the diploma and transcript translated into Italian, certified by the consulate and accompanied by the Dichiarazione di Valore in loco, a consular document describing the Georgian qualification in Italian terms. The translation must render subjects, grades and the grading scale exactly, since the Dichiarazione di Valore is drafted from it. Some universities now accept a CIMEA statement of comparability instead; we prepare the documents in the form that either route requires. Master's, doctoral and conservatory applicants, and professionals seeking recognition of Georgian qualifications (nurses, doctors, engineers, architects) through the relevant ministry, need the same documents plus course descriptions translated with academic terminology.

Italian language certificates (CILS, CELI, PLIDA) are in Italian already; Georgian certificates of Italian language courses are translated when a university asks for them.

Business with Italy: fashion, food, machinery, energy and wine

Italian companies supply Georgia with machinery, textiles, food products, furniture and design, and are active in energy, construction, banking and hospitality; Georgian companies export wine, hazelnuts, mineral water and agricultural products to Italy and buy Italian equipment for wineries, bakeries, textile plants and food processing. Translations into Italian are done by native or near-native Italian translators and reviewed by a second linguist in the format the consulate expects; Georgian names follow the passport spelling. Italian documents into Georgian (passports, atti di nascita and matrimonio, casellario giudiziale, visure, procure, sentenze, diplomas) are translated in full including the apostille and notarized in Tbilisi. Standard documents are usually ready within one working day once the original is available; full visa or reunification files are quoted as a set with a firm date.

A typical timeline for a work or family file

For a decreto flussi worker, the Italian employer applies for the nulla osta when the quota window opens, and months may pass before it is issued. When it is, the worker has a limited period to apply for the visa at the embassy in Tbilisi, and that is when the Georgian documents must be ready: passport, criminal record certificate with apostille (timed so that it is fresh at the appointment), and for some categories a diploma or professional certificate with apostille. The translations into Italian are prepared and presented at the consular section for certification together with the apostilled originals, and the certified set goes into the visa file. Starting the translations before the nulla osta arrives, and ordering the criminal record certificate only once the appointment is known, avoids both delay and expiry.

For family reunification, the sponsor in Italy first obtains the nulla osta from the Sportello Unico with proof of income and housing; the family in Georgia then applies for the visa with the marriage certificate, children's birth certificates and, where relevant, a certificate of marital status, all apostilled, translated into Italian and consular-certified. The embassy verifies family ties carefully, and any discrepancy between the spelling of a name on a birth certificate and on a passport is queried, so we align every document to the passports before the file goes in. After arrival, the family's registration in the Anagrafe and the children's school enrollment reuse the same certified translations, and later steps (permesso renewal, citizenship) may require traduzione giurata in Italy, which we can prepare for from the scans on file.

What to send for an Italian translation

Send every page of the document, name the Italian institution and procedure (visa category, Sportello Unico, comune, university), and forward their document list. Send the passport data page so that names match across the file.
