Marriage Certificate Translation in Georgia

Marriage certificates travel in both directions through Georgia: thousands of foreign couples marry in Tbilisi and Batumi each year and need their Georgian certificate recognized at home, while Georgian citizens need their certificates for spouse visas, name changes and family reunification abroad. TARGMANEBI translates and notarizes marriage certificates for every one of these situations and prepares the surrounding documents in the same consistent style.

  • Georgian marriage certificates translated for spouse visas, foreign registries and surname changes.
  • Foreign marriage certificates translated into Georgian for residence permits, property and inheritance.
  • Pre-marriage document packages for foreigners registering a marriage in Georgia.
  • Apostille sequencing and notarization handled in one order.

Married in Georgia? Getting your certificate recognized at home

Georgia has become one of the most popular places in the region for foreign couples to marry, partly because the registration procedure at the Public Service Development Agency is quick and does not require residence. The certificate issued afterwards is in Georgian. To have the marriage recorded in the couple's home country, whether that is Germany, Italy, Israel, India, Turkey, Iran, Russia, Ukraine or the United States, the certificate must normally be apostilled by PSDA and then translated into the language of the destination country, with the translation notarized.

Different countries accept different formats. German registry offices generally accept a Georgian notarized translation with an apostille on the original but sometimes ask for a translation by a sworn translator in Germany; Italian comuni usually require the apostilled certificate and a translation certified either by the Italian consulate or by a court-sworn translator in Italy; Israeli, Indian and Iranian authorities most often accept the apostilled original with a notarized English or local-language translation. We prepare the package in the format most likely to be accepted for your country and say plainly when a local sworn translation may also be needed.

Because the certificate is often needed in two countries at once (each spouse registers the marriage at home), we prepare two sets in different languages from a single review, with names spelled identically in both.

Documents foreigners need before marrying in Georgia

Before the ceremony, PSDA requires each foreign spouse to present a passport with a notarized Georgian translation and, depending on nationality, proof that they are free to marry: a certificate of no impediment, a single-status affidavit, a divorce decree or a death certificate of a previous spouse. These foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized in the country of origin and translated into Georgian, and the translation must be notarized in Georgia. Couples regularly arrive with documents that are translated but not apostilled, or apostilled in the wrong order, and lose a day of their visit sorting it out.

We handle the full pre-marriage set: passport translations for both spouses, translation of the certificate of no impediment or single-status declaration together with its apostille, translation of divorce or death certificates where relevant, and, when neither spouse speaks Georgian, an interpreter for the registration itself, which PSDA requires so that the parties understand what they sign. Send the documents before you travel and the package can be ready for collection when you land.

Georgian certificates for visas, reunification and name changes

Georgian citizens most often need a translated marriage certificate for a spouse or family reunification visa, where the embassy of Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom or the United States wants proof of the marriage; for a change of surname on foreign documents, bank accounts and residence cards after marriage; for joint mortgage, insurance and inheritance matters abroad; and for tax and social security filings that depend on marital status. Embassies in Tbilisi generally accept a notarized translation, and most ask for the apostille on the original certificate.

Georgian marriage certificates of different ages differ in the same way as birth certificates: Soviet-era forms in Russian and Georgian, Georgian forms of the 1990s and 2000s, and current PSDA forms with registration numbers and QR codes. Older certificates often cannot be apostilled, and PSDA can issue a duplicate on the current form from the civil register. We check this before translation and, when a duplicate is needed, help you request it.

A marriage certificate also records surname decisions: whether each spouse kept, took or combined a surname. This field is translated precisely because foreign registries use it to update their records, and a vague rendering can result in the wrong surname on a residence card.

Foreign marriage certificates used in Georgia

A foreign spouse applying for a Georgian residence permit on the basis of marriage to a Georgian citizen must submit the foreign marriage certificate with an apostille or consular legalization and a notarized Georgian translation. The same is true when a couple buys property jointly through a Georgian notary, when a spouse claims inheritance, when a marriage registered abroad is recorded in the Georgian civil register, and when a child born to the couple is registered as a Georgian citizen.

We translate certificates from the countries that appear most often in this flow: Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, India, Israel, the EU member states, the United Kingdom and the United States. Multilingual EU extracts still need a notarized Georgian translation because Georgian is not among their languages. Religious marriage certificates (a nikah nama, a ketubah, a church certificate) are translated when they are the only record available, but Georgian authorities usually require a civil certificate, and we tell you this before you order.

What is translated and how names are handled

A full translation reproduces the certificate number, the names of both spouses before and after marriage, their dates and places of birth, citizenship as recorded, the date and place of registration, the record number, the registering authority, the signatures and seals, and all later annotations: divorce marks, name-change stamps, apostille stickers and consular legalization notes. Reverse sides are translated when they carry text.

Names follow the passports of the spouses, and where a certificate shows a maiden name and a married name we keep both in the order the certificate uses. When the marriage certificate is part of a family package with birth certificates and passports, we align the spelling across every document at the start. For couples with names in two different scripts, we prepare a short spelling reference and use it in both sets of translations.

A standard certificate in a common language pair is usually translated and notarized within one working day once the original is available in Tbilisi for the notarized copy. Apostille processing and duplicate issuance, when needed, add their own time, which we include in the timeline. Couples abroad can order remotely with a relative presenting the original and courier delivery of the finished set.

What to send for a marriage certificate translation

Photograph both sides of the certificate with all stamps visible. Send the passports of both spouses so that names are spelled correctly, and tell us the destination country and the exact purpose. If you are preparing to marry in Georgia, send every document you plan to bring and we will check whether each one is apostilled and complete.

If you have written requirements from a registry, embassy or lawyer abroad, forward them; the wording tells us which certification format they expect.

Questions and answers

We married in Tbilisi. What do we need to register the marriage in our country?

Usually the Georgian certificate with an apostille from PSDA and a notarized translation into the language of your country. Some registries also require a sworn translation done locally; we tell you when your country is known to ask for that.

What must a foreigner bring to marry in Georgia?

A passport with a notarized Georgian translation and, depending on nationality, an apostilled certificate of no impediment or single-status declaration, plus divorce or death certificates from previous marriages, all translated into Georgian and notarized. An interpreter is required at the registration if a spouse does not speak Georgian.

Can you translate a certificate of no impediment issued abroad?

Yes. It must carry an apostille or consular legalization from the issuing country; we translate it, including the apostille, into Georgian and notarize the translation.

My marriage certificate is from the Soviet period. Will it be accepted abroad?

Often not without a fresh duplicate from PSDA, because the old form usually cannot be apostilled. We check this before translating.

Do you handle the surname-change field?

Yes. The certificate records which surname each spouse took, and this is translated exactly because foreign registries update their records from it.

How fast can it be ready?

A standard certificate is usually translated and notarized within one working day once the original is in Tbilisi. Apostille and duplicate steps, if required, add their processing time.

Can you prepare two language versions at once?

Yes. When each spouse needs the certificate in a different language, we prepare both sets from a single review with identical name spellings.
