A Croatian translator matters most when the document's official status, terminology, identifiers and purpose must be carried across with the text. Administrative, civil and legal documents contain specific wording, abbreviations and institutional names whose inaccurate rendering can change their meaning.
Croatia is relevant for people who work or study there, arrange residence, marry, prove family ties, open a company, deal with a bank or work with Croatian partners. Such cases often need a linked package rather than one paper: passport, birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificate, diploma, employment letter, bank statement and power of attorney. We set the form in advance - informational use, submission to an official body, notarization, or with an apostille or other legalization step.

Croatian in official documents
Croatian uses the Latin alphabet with the special letters č, ć, đ, š and ž. In names, surnames, addresses and place names these carry meaning, and dropping or replacing them can create a data mismatch in an official package. We compare the passport's Latin form, the original document and any earlier official translations you provide.
Georgian names going into Croatian need particular care: if the person has an international passport, its Latin form takes priority, and the translator never invents a new transliteration. The same applies to company names, streets, universities and place names. Croatian and Serbian are closely related, but an official Croatian document must use the Croatian standard - automatic substitution of administrative vocabulary, spelling or terms is wrong.

Croatian civil registries and e-Civil Registries
Croatian civil registries issue documents confirming birth, marriage, citizenship and other civil facts, and electronic services now produce digital extracts and certificates as PDFs. The translation keeps their full structure: heading, issuing body, electronic marks, registration data, QR code or verification instructions.
An electronic document is not judged by appearance alone - it may lack a traditional wet seal but contain electronic authentication elements. We add nothing the original does not say, mark the visible elements clearly and keep the data layout so the recipient can compare translation and original easily. Confirming the authenticity of the original, if required, is a separate procedure from translation.
OIB documents and personal identification data
The OIB (osobni identifikacijski broj) is a permanent Croatian identifier for persons and organisations. Croatia's official state portal explains that it is used in registers, everyday transactions and data exchange. A translation may be needed for tax, property, banking, employment, company or representation matters. The eleven-digit code is never translated; every digit is checked against the source separately.
According to the Croatian Tax Administration, a foreign national may need an OIB in an official procedure or when registering as a taxpayer. For residence registration, the number is assigned by the relevant MUP police station; on other grounds the person applies to the Tax Administration, and an application can also be made through a representative. The package may therefore include a passport, a power of attorney and proof of the grounds.
Residence and work documents for the Croatian MUP
The Ministry of the Interior and the relevant police administration play the central role in foreigners' residence and work in Croatia. Depending on the application, you may need a passport, criminal record certificate, proof of accommodation, health insurance, income, an employment contract, education documents or proof of family ties. Requirements differ by case, so check the specific list with the official body.
The language rule must be checked by application category. The MUP's official page for digital nomad temporary residence, for example, accepts copies of documents in Croatian or English - one category's rule that does not automatically apply to every residence type. In some citizenship proceedings the MUP explicitly requires a certified Croatian translation, so send us the current instruction for your exact application. Deadlines matter too: some certificates must be recently issued, others need a specific certification, full translation or apostille.
Apostille, legalization and the sworn court interpreter
An apostille verifies a public document's origin - signature, capacity and seal - but does not replace the translation or confirm its content. According to the official instruction of Croatia's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, a municipal court issues apostilles only on documents of bodies within its territorial jurisdiction, and the Ministry of Justice is also competent for certain documents; in practice people usually go to the municipal court. Georgia and Croatia are both parties to the Apostille Convention, but the recipient still confirms acceptability. The safe sequence: identify the source type, obtain any authentication and apostille, then translate every sheet together. See apostille and legalization.
In Georgia, notarization usually certifies the translator's signature; it does not mean the notary checks every term. In Croatia, an ovjereni prijevod (certified translation) is often tied to a permanent court interpreter - stalni sudski tumač - and MUP materials also require foreign documents to be translated into Croatian by a certified court interpreter. A Georgian notarization and a Croatian court interpreter's certification are not the same legal form; if the recipient names a sudski tumač, confirm in writing in advance whether a translation certified in Georgia is acceptable.
If the document must be submitted in its apostilled form, the apostille page, stamp, extra sheet and every official note belong in the translation package.
Business documents and the Court Register
Croatian business life relies heavily on Court Register data showing a company's status, address, legal form, capital and authorised representatives. Business translation may cover a current or historical extract, articles, partners' decisions, a director's appointment, a power of attorney, financial statements and service contracts, each with a different function.
In company extracts the OIB, MBS, EUID, court name, registered address and rules of representation get particular attention. "Director", "member", "authorised representative" and "prokurist" are not the same status, so we choose context-appropriate terms and keep the original Croatian name where useful. See registry extract translation.
Education, legal, medical and financial documents
Education. For study or professional work in Croatia the diploma's first page is not always enough: the university or recognition body may want the supplement, syllabus, programme length, mode of study and institution status. A Georgian qualification name does not always match a Croatian level, so the translation reflects the official original title and never raises or lowers its academic status. Legal. Sale, lease and employment contracts, powers of attorney, partner agreements, judgments, claims and lawyers' letters. Parties, obligations, deadlines, amounts, liability and termination are linked correctly, article structure is kept, and unclear abbreviations or seals are clarified rather than invented. See legal translation. Medical. Discharge summaries, diagnoses, tests, radiology, surgery descriptions, medication lists, vaccination records and recommendations for continued treatment, consultations, insurance, rehabilitation or work capacity assessment. Doses, units, dates, anatomical and Latin terms are checked, and brand and active substance recorded separately. See medical translation. Financial and digital. Bank statements, income and tax certificates, loans, property extracts and valuations, with currency, periods, account numbers, balances and percentages unchanged. For e-Građani and other digital documents with electronic signatures, time stamps or verification codes, send the original downloaded PDF rather than a screenshot; a password-protected file needs the access code or an unlocked copy. How a Croatian translation order runs

The price is by agreement and depends on text volume, complexity, deadline, formatting and certification. See translation prices.
You can use our Tbilisi office on Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave or work remotely - no visit is needed for an assessment. Please call before visiting: finishing the translation does not mean the notarial act happens the same minute, since volume, the translator's check and the notary's schedule all affect timing.

Will the MUP accept a Croatian translation notarized in Georgia?
It depends on the MUP procedure. A Georgian notarization does not automatically equal certification by a Croatian permanent court interpreter (stalni sudski tumač). If the instruction asks for a certified court interpreter, confirm with the police administration first.
Which body issues an apostille on a Croatian document?
A municipal court issues it on documents of issuing bodies within its jurisdiction; in relevant cases the Croatian Ministry of Justice is also competent. The exact body depends on the issuer and the document type.
Where does a foreigner get an OIB?
On residence registration it is usually assigned by the relevant MUP police station. On other legal grounds the foreigner applies to the competent Tax Administration office, possibly through a representative.
Must a Georgian document for the MUP be in Croatian, or is English accepted?
It depends on the category. The digital nomad temporary residence page, for example, accepts Croatian or English copies, while other proceedings may require a certified Croatian translation. Use the current instruction for your application.
Can Croatian be replaced with a Serbian translation?
Not in an official document. The languages are close, but administrative vocabulary, spelling and institutional terms differ, so a Croatian recipient needs the Croatian standard.
Which diploma pages are translated for a Croatian university?
The recipient may want the diploma, transcript, Diploma Supplement, syllabus, subject descriptions, credits and student status certificate. Check the full list with the university or recognition body first.
Can I get an assessment from a Croatian PDF?
Yes. Send a complete, uncropped PDF or photo showing edges, back, seals, signatures, electronic code and apostille. If the final procedure needs the original or a certified copy, we will tell you.
