Traducción jurada: Spain's sworn translator system and Georgian documents

Spain has a formal system of traductores-intérpretes jurados appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Spanish public administrations (extranjería offices, the Registro Civil, the Ministry of Education for homologación, courts and notaries) require foreign documents to be accompanied by a traducción jurada made by one of them, or by a translation certified by a Spanish consulate abroad. Consular certification of translations is not offered everywhere and not for every document type, so Georgian applicants usually end up with one of two routes: a notarized translation from Georgia where the recipient accepts it, or a traducción jurada by a sworn translator in Spain.

In practice: for visa applications and for many university admissions, a Georgian notarized translation into Spanish with an apostille on the original is accepted; for extranjería, Registro Civil, homologación and court matters in Spain, a traducción jurada by a Spanish sworn translator is required. Several sworn translators in Spain work from scanned apostilled documents and deliver electronically signed sworn translations, which are now legally valid in Spain, so the requirement does not mean traveling. We prepare the apostilled original and, where the client prefers, coordinate the sworn translation with a traductor jurado we work with, or provide our notarized translation where that is what the recipient accepts. Latin American countries (Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru and others) have their own systems, from traductores públicos to consular certification, and we confirm the requirement for each.

Residence, family reunification, marriage and nationality

Georgians applying for Spanish residence through work visas, arraigo (social, labor or family), student residence conversion or family reunification (reagrupación familiar) need birth, marriage and criminal record certificates, passports, and sometimes diplomas and work experience letters, apostilled and translated. Marriage at a Spanish Registro Civil requires an apostilled birth certificate, a certificate of marital status (certificado de soltería or fe de vida y estado equivalent) and, for some registries, a certificate of Georgian law on marriage capacity, all in traducción jurada. Spanish nationality applications by residence require birth certificates of the applicant and, in some cases, of the parents, and criminal record certificates, also in sworn form. Spaniards and Latin Americans marrying or registering matters in Georgia need their documents (partida de nacimiento, certificado de antecedentes penales, certificado de soltería, DNI or pasaporte) apostilled at home and translated into Georgian with notarization in Tbilisi.

Name spelling is a recurrent problem: Spanish documents carry two surnames and Georgian documents one, and Spanish registries need to know which is which. We add a translator's note where the structure of the name could be misread, and we keep the passport spelling across the whole file.

Study, homologación and professional recognition

Georgian students applying to Spanish universities present their atestati and annex or diplomas and transcripts for admission and for the credencial de acceso through UNEDasiss, and later for the student visa; graduates seeking to work in regulated professions apply to the Ministry of Education for homologación or equivalencia of their degree, and nurses, doctors and engineers face additional professional recognition. Translations must render Georgian subjects, grades and the 10-point school scale or 100-point university scale exactly, since Spanish institutions convert them to the Spanish 10-point scale under published rules. Spanish companies work in Georgian renewable energy, infrastructure, water, tourism and retail, and Spanish and Latin American visitors are a growing part of Georgian tourism; Georgian wine, tourism and hospitality businesses market to Spanish speakers and attend trade fairs in Spain and Latin America. Translators, dialect and turnaround

Translations into Spanish are done by native Spanish translators, in peninsular Spanish for Spain and in neutral or country-specific Latin American Spanish where the recipient is in the Americas, and reviewed by a second linguist. Spanish documents into Georgian are translated in full including the apostille and notarized in Tbilisi. Georgian names follow the passport spelling; Spanish double surnames and accents are preserved in Georgian renderings with a note where needed. Standard documents are usually ready within one working day once the original is available for the notarized copy; full residence, reunification or homologación files are quoted as a set with a firm date, allowing for coordination with a traductor jurado where one is needed.

Typical scenarios

A Georgian care worker in Valencia applying for arraigo social after years of residence: birth certificate and criminal record certificate from Georgia, apostilled, in traducción jurada for the extranjería office, plus Spanish-issued documents. We obtain the Georgian documents through a relative or by authorization, place the apostilles, and coordinate the sworn translation with a traductor jurado who delivers an electronically signed version directly to the applicant in Spain, so that nothing has to be posted between countries.

Send every page of the document, name the institution and procedure in Spain or the Latin American country, and forward their document list. Send the passport data page so that names match; if the person has two surnames, tell us how they appear in the passport.
