User Manual and Instructions Translation into Georgian

The container is at customs, the shelves in the stores are empty, and the package of 300-page manuals is still in English, Chinese or Turkish. For an equipment importer, Georgian instructions are a precondition for selling: without them the customer does not get full information about the product, and the store is exposed to complaints, returns and inspections.

TARGMANEBI translates user manuals, installation and operating instructions, safety information, warranty cards and packaging texts into Georgian. You get the translation back in the original layout, ready for print, the same or next day.

Who this service is for

  • Importers of household appliances and electronics - dozens of new models and updated instructions every season;
  • Retail chains - product cards, packaging texts and warranty terms in one consistent terminology;
  • Distributors of industrial equipment - operating and maintenance manuals and spare parts catalogues;
  • Suppliers of building materials and tools - installation instructions and safety data;
  • Manufacturers entering the Georgian market - a Georgian version before the product launch.

Manuals and interfaces for medical equipment are translated by a separate specialist team: medical device localization.

What the law requires

The Law of Georgia "On Consumer Rights Protection" (29 March 2022, No. 1455-VIII) sets the language requirement directly:

  • Article 5(1) - before a contract is concluded, the trader must give the consumer reliable, complete and clear information in the Georgian language, including information about the main characteristics of the product;
  • Article 25 - misleading commercial practice includes, among other things, giving false information about a risk to the consumer's personal safety;
  • Article 34 - fines for violations are imposed by the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia. The upper limit of the fine is 2% of the trader's turnover in the previous financial year, and for a repeat violation within 12 months the fine is doubled.

On top of this come sector-specific technical regulations. For example, the technical regulation on appliances burning gaseous fuels requires the manufacturer to supply the appliance with instructions written in Georgian. For a large importer this means that a Georgian manual is not a one-off task but an ongoing operational process.

An instruction that is formally in Georgian but cannot be understood does not count as clear information. Why machine translation is a risk here: Google Translate and consumer instructions.

How we handle large volumes

Translating a single instruction leaflet and translating a seasonal package of manuals for 40 models are different tasks. Work on a large volume is organised like this:

  • File analysis - the CAT tool counts the new text, the sentences already in the database and the repetitions between documents. You see straight away which part is actually new;
  • Termbase - we fix your terms and button names. If the device screen has a Georgian interface, the manual uses exactly the same words;
  • Parallel translation - the package is split between several translators, and all of them work on one Translation Memory and one termbase;
  • Editing and QA - the editor checks terminology consistency, numbers, units of measurement, model codes and missed segments;
  • DTP - the Georgian text goes back into the InDesign, Illustrator or PDF layout. The font, the diagrams and the page count match the original.

The package is delivered model by model or chapter by chapter, so your team can start checking and sending files to print in parallel.

Translation Memory: next season goes faster

The manual for a new model often repeats most of its predecessor: the safety chapter, the warranty, care and maintenance stay almost unchanged. Stored in Translation Memory, these blocks are recognised automatically, and the translator works only on the new features.

  • Less work volume on every following project;
  • The same term across all brands and product lines: the same button has the same name in the instructions for a refrigerator, an air conditioner and a washing machine;
  • Faster launch - the Georgian version is ready while the goods are still on their way;
  • Your database is yours - on request we hand over the Translation Memory and the termbase in the standard TMX and TBX formats.

If you already have translations from previous years, send them to us together with the originals. We will build your database from them, and it will work from your very first order.

Why an "approximate" translation is not enough

An error in an instruction affects the user's safety. If "Do not immerse in water" is translated as "არ დაასველოთ" ("do not get it wet"), the instruction is talking about a different risk: immersion and getting wet are different safety limits. If "Grounded outlet" turns into "მიწის როზეტი" (literally "a socket of the ground") instead of "დამიწებული როზეტი" ("a grounded socket"), even an electrician will be misled.

We check for errors like these with three filters:

  • Terminology - the established Georgian terms of electrical engineering, heating engineering and mechanics;
  • Units and numbers - volts, watts, bar, °C and units of measurement unchanged, decimals written according to the Georgian convention;
  • The reader - the text is written for the customer who holds the instructions in their hands, not for an engineer.

Safety levels are translated the same way throughout the package: WARNING - "გაფრთხილება", CAUTION - "სიფრთხილე", NOTICE - "შენიშვნა". This word is exactly how the user recognises the severity of the risk, so two levels are never merged into one word.

Formats and DTP

The manual comes back in the same format you sent it in, ready for print or for uploading to your website:

  • PDF, including PDF only, without the source file;
  • Adobe InDesign (INDD, IDML), Illustrator (AI), FrameMaker;
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • XML, HTML and online help centre exports;
  • packaging artwork and label files.

Georgian text is often longer than English, so the DTP specialist adjusts text frames, diagram labels and page breaks. Latin fonts do not contain Georgian letters, so we choose a Georgian font that stays close to the style of the original. For manuals with drawings, see how PDF and AutoCAD drawings are translated without losing the format.

Reviewing your existing Georgian instructions

Many importers already have Georgian instructions on the shelf, prepared by the manufacturer or a previous supplier. Often this is machine translation: grammatically broken, with inconsistent terms and missing warnings. In such cases it is not necessary to translate everything again.

  • Review against the original - the editor compares the Georgian text with the source and marks errors of meaning, omissions and inconsistent terms;
  • Priorities - safety information, installation and electrical connection are corrected first, and the rest of the text after that;
  • Transfer to the database - the corrected text is stored in Translation Memory, so the correct version is what gets repeated for the next models.

General editing principles: editing and proofreading.

Languages and confidentiality

Most often we translate into Georgian from English, Russian, Turkish, German, Italian and Chinese. We translate Chinese-language instructions directly, without an intermediate language. If needed, we prepare a Russian version alongside the Georgian one, with the same termbase.

The instructions for a model that has not yet been released are a trade secret. Only the translators working on the project have access to the files, and we sign an NDA on request. Details: confidentiality policy.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a manual translation take?

The same or next day. On a large package several translators work at the same time with one shared termbase, and delivery is model by model or chapter by chapter.

Will you take instructions in Chinese if there is no English version?

Yes. We translate from Chinese into Georgian directly, without an intermediate language.

Will you return the file ready for print?

Yes. After DTP you receive a PDF and, if you sent us the source file, the updated InDesign or Illustrator file.

Can you translate only the pages that have changed?

Yes. Translation Memory automatically recognises text that has already been translated, and the work covers only the changes.

Does the law require a Georgian version of the instructions?

Article 5 of the Law on Consumer Rights Protection requires the trader to give the consumer complete and clear information about the product in Georgian before the contract is concluded. Some sector-specific regulations require Georgian instructions directly.

Will you use our list of terms?

Yes. Your list goes into the termbase and every translator uses it. If you do not have a list, we will compile one and agree it with you.

Can we sign an NDA?

Yes, before the files are shared, on your form or ours.
