What Financial Documents Do You Need for a Tourist Visa? (Bank Statement and Employment Letter)

The most common advice visa applicants hear from friends is this: "Put a large sum into your account before the interview." This very advice is often the reason for a refusal. Along with the amount, the consul checks where the money came from and how long it has been in your account.

This article is for anyone preparing a visitor or tourist visa application for a country where Georgian citizens need a visa: the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, Ireland and others. No visa is needed for a short trip to the Schengen area with an ordinary biometric passport, but you may be asked at the border to prove that you have sufficient funds, so the rules described below will be useful there as well.

Why a lump-sum deposit looks suspicious

Picture two bank statements. In the first, the balance moves between GEL 1,500 and GEL 3,000 over 6 months, the salary arrives at the start of every month, and ordinary spending shows up during the month. In the second, there is almost nothing in the account for 5 months, and then GEL 15,000 comes in a week before the application.

The second statement shows more money, but to the consul it is less convincing. An unexplained lump sum paid in all at once often means borrowed money that will go back after the visa is issued. The UK Home Office guidance, for example, asks directly that financial documents show where the money comes from, not just the balance.

If a large sum came in legitimately - you sold a car, received a gift, rental income from a property or a bonus - explain it with a document: a sale agreement, a gift agreement, a lease agreement, a letter from your employer. These documents also need to be translated, together with the translation of the bank statement.

What the consul looks for in a 3-6 month statement

The period of the statement is set by the checklist of the specific embassy, often the last 3 to 6 months. Over that period the consul looks for four things:

  • Regular income - a salary, pension or business income that arrives every month on roughly the same day;
  • Life in Georgia - utility bills, loan repayments, shopping. This shows that you live here and will come back;
  • A stable balance - an amount that covers the cost of the trip without stopping your ordinary life;
  • Consistency with other documents - the salary credited in the statement should match the one stated in the employment letter.

The last point is the one people forget most often. If the employment letter says GEL 3,000 and the statement shows GEL 2,400 coming in every month, the explanation is simple: the letter states the gross salary and the statement shows it after personal income tax. But this explanation should be written in the letter, not improvised at the interview.

Which documents should accompany the statement

  • Employment letter - your position, start date, salary and leave covering the travel dates;
  • RS.ge certificate - the Revenue Service certificate on personal income, which confirms the employer's letter from an independent source;
  • For an individual entrepreneur - an extract from the Registry of Entrepreneurs and tax returns;
  • With a sponsor - the sponsor letter, the sponsor's employment letter and bank statement, and a document proving the family relationship;
  • Property - an extract from the Public Registry, if you own a flat or land. This is not a financial document, but it shows your ties to Georgia.

Why translation accuracy is decisive here

The consul reads the translation together with the original. In the translated bank statement they find the salary payments and compare them with the translated employment letter. If at that point:

  • an amount has been carried over incorrectly in the translation, for example the decimal separator has been changed;
  • the date 03.07.2026 has been left in the English translation in a form that an American will read as 7 March;
  • the surname is spelled one way in the statement, another in the letter and a third in the passport;
  • some of the transactions were considered "unnecessary" and were not translated,

the consul cannot tell whether the translator made a mistake or something is wrong with the document. In such cases the doubt is resolved against the applicant. That is why the financial package should be translated together, with the same names, terms and number formatting, and the statement table with the same columns as in the original. Family trips and shared costs

When a family travels together, one spouse often covers the costs, while the other has no income of their own or earns less. In that case:

  • the spouse who covers the costs submits a bank statement, an employment letter and, if needed, a sponsor letter;
  • the relationship is proven by a marriage certificate, and for children by a birth certificate, and both are translated;
  • the balance should cover the costs of the whole family, not just one person;
  • if a child is travelling with one parent, you may also need the other parent's consent: which documents you need to travel with a child.

If the tickets or the hotel are already paid for, the payment shows in the statement. That is a good thing: the consul sees that part of the cost is already covered. So do not remove such transactions from the statement, and keep them in full in the translation too.

Five mistakes we often see

  • paying borrowed money into the account a week before the interview;
  • a statement for the last month only, when the checklist asks for 3 or 6 months;
  • a screenshot of internet banking instead of a statement;
  • submitting only one of several accounts, when the salary is paid into another one;
  • an employment letter that does not mention the salary or the leave.

Do not use a statement or letter older than 1 year either: the UK guidance lists such documents among those you should not submit.

Finances at the interview

If the visa includes an interview, as with the USA, the consul asks short questions about your finances: where you work, how much you earn, who is paying for the trip. Your answers must match your documents. If the letter says GEL 3,000 and at the interview you say "about 2,000", the accuracy of your documents is called into question.

Before the interview, look through your own statement and employment letter: how much money you have, what salary is stated, how long you have worked in this job. Keep the documents and their translations with you in one folder, with each original and its translation side by side, so that you can quickly find the page the consul asks for. Checklist before you apply

  • the statement covers exactly the period the embassy's checklist asks for;
  • large incoming payments are explained with a document;
  • the employment letter states the salary and the leave, and the salary matches the statement;
  • the RS.ge certificate has been obtained, if the embassy or your situation requires it;
  • all the documents have been translated together, with consistent names;
  • you know whether you need a certified or a notarized translation. More details: does a bank statement need notarization.

Frequently asked questions

How many months of bank statements does a tourist visa need?

The period is set by the checklist of the specific embassy, often the last 3 to 6 months. Submit exactly the period the checklist asks for.

Can I pay money into my account before the interview?

A large unexplained deposit shortly before the application looks suspicious, because it often means borrowed money. If the money came in legitimately, explain it with a document, for example a sale or gift agreement.

How much money should I have in my account?

Not every country sets a fixed amount. The consul assesses whether the money covers the cost of the trip, taking your income and expenses into account. Regular income and a stable balance are more convincing than a large lump sum paid in all at once.

My employment letter and bank statement show different salaries. What should I do?

Often the letter states the gross salary and the statement shows the net amount. Ask your employer to state in the letter which amount it shows, or to give both.

Do I need financial documents for Schengen countries?

No visa is needed for a short trip with an ordinary biometric passport, but you may be asked at the border to prove sufficient funds. For a national (D) visa, financial documents and their translation are mandatory.

How long does it take to translate financial documents?

The bank statement, employment letter and RS.ge certificate together are ready the same or next day.
