Translation of Business Registration and Immigration (TRP) Documents for Foreigners

Opening a company and getting a residence permit in Georgia is relatively simple - provided your documents are prepared correctly. The most common hold-up is always the same: the foreign document arrives without an apostille, the translation does not meet the Georgian authority's requirements, or the name in the translation does not match the passport.

TARGMANEBI is your local legal translation partner in Tbilisi: we translate foreign articles of association, registry extracts, police certificates and family documents into Georgian, with notarial certification. A standard document is ready the same or next day, and you can communicate with us in English, Russian or Georgian.

For expats: your foreign company documents, police certificates and civil records are translated into Georgian and notarized - for company registration at the Public Registry and for residence permits at the Public Service Hall. Standard documents are ready the same or the next day. Message us on WhatsApp in English or Russian.

Step 1: apostille in the issuing country

A document issued abroad acquires official force in Georgia only after it has been certified:

  • From a country that is party to the Hague Convention (the European Union, the USA, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Israel, India, China and others) - an apostille, placed by the competent authority of the issuing country;
  • From a non-member country (for example, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq, Iran) - consular legalization.

An apostille cannot be placed on a foreign document in Georgia - it is a procedure of the issuing country. So check whether your documents have an apostille before you travel.

Since 2025, the Public Registry has been sending some apostilled foreign documents to the relevant authority for additional verification, which can take about 15 days. Plan your timeline with this risk in mind.

Step 2: Georgian translation with notarial certification

The apostilled document is translated into Georgian - including the apostille stamp - and the translation is certified by a notary. This is our stage.

  • Turnaround - a standard document the same or next day;
  • Names - exactly as in the passport, spelled the same way in every document;
  • Languages - English, Russian, Turkish, German, French, Ukrainian, Arabic, Chinese and others.

The company registration package

If the company is founded by an individual

Under the Public Registry's instruction, a passport issued in English or Russian does not need a translation for registration. A passport issued in any other language needs a Georgian translation.

If the founder is a foreign company

The parent company's documents are submitted to the Public Registry with an apostille and a notarized Georgian translation:

  • Registry extract (Certificate of Incorporation, Certificate of Good Standing, Handelsregisterauszug);
  • Articles of association (Articles of Association, Memorandum, Satzung);
  • The document confirming the director's authority and the decision (Board Resolution) to establish a company or a branch in Georgia;
  • A power of attorney, if registration is handled by a representative.

The Public Registry's instruction requires a Georgian translation of a transaction drawn up in a foreign language. Under the same instruction, a company may request a Georgian-English version of its registration documents - we prepare the bilingual format as well. Details on translating extracts: registry extract translation.

Translating articles of association: terminology matters

Foreign articles of association do not map exactly onto Georgian legal forms. A Limited Liability Company, a GmbH and a Ltd are all a limited liability company in Georgian, but Director, Managing Director and Geschäftsführer do not always carry the same authority. In the translation we keep the structure of the original and align the terms with Georgian legislation.

The bank and the ultimate beneficial owner

After registration, a Georgian bank opening an account will often ask for documents on the founder and the ultimate beneficial owner (UBO). If those documents are foreign, we translate them in the same package, so you do not need a separate order for the bank.

The residence permit (TRP) package

Residence permits are issued by the Public Service Development Agency through the Public Service Hall. The list of documents depends on the type of permit - work, investment, business, family reunification or study. A document issued abroad is submitted with an apostille or legalization and a notarized Georgian translation. The documents we translate most often are:

  • Passport - a full translation with notarial certification;
  • Birth and marriage certificates - for family reunification and for permits for family members;
  • Diploma - for a study or work residence permit;
  • Foreign company documents - for a business residence permit;
  • Police certificate - when the authority or the employer asks for one.
About the police certificate: a foreign criminal record certificate is not a document required by law for a residence permit, although it is sometimes requested in individual cases, and employers and banks ask for it too. If you are asked for one, it must have an apostille and be translated into Georgian. More details: foreign criminal record certificate translation.

Common mistakes that stop the package

  • An apostille on a copy instead of the original - in some countries the apostille is placed on a notarized copy, and the Georgian authority may require an apostille on the original. Check in advance what the receiving body accepts;
  • A name spelled in different ways - "Mohammed" in the passport, "Muhammad" in the diploma, "Mohamed" in the marriage certificate. In the translation we follow the passport record, and we recommend explaining the difference to the authority in advance;
  • An old extract - a foreign company's registry extract often has to be recent. An apostille and a translation of an old extract are wasted money;
  • The apostille is not translated - the apostille stamp is part of the document and must be rendered in full in the translation;
  • Family members' documents arrive late - your spouse's and children's documents need the same apostille and translation. Prepare them at the same time.

The order in which to prepare the package

  1. The list - together with a lawyer or the authority, establish which documents you need for your type of permit or your form of company;
  2. Apostille at home - have every document apostilled in the issuing country before you come to Georgia;
  3. Scans to us - send us the scans so that we can check the apostille, the names and the dates;
  4. Translation - we translate into Georgian, including the apostille, with consistent terminology;
  5. Notarial certification - once the original or a notarized copy is presented, the same or next day;
  6. Submission - at the Public Service Hall or the Public Registry, by you or your representative.

In this order no document is translated twice and none is sent back because of the apostille. If some of your documents are still on their way, we start translating what you already have, so that your submission date does not slip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start the translation before I arrive?

Yes. Send us scans of the apostilled documents - we will prepare the translation and complete the notarial certification with the original or a notarized copy.

My document has no apostille. Can you get one in Georgia?

No. Only the issuing country can place an apostille on a foreign document. First the apostille there, then the translation here.

Does an English passport need a translation?

For company registration at the Public Registry, a passport issued in English or Russian does not need a translation. For other authorities, including for a residence permit, check the requirement in advance.

Is a police certificate mandatory for a residence permit?

It is not a document required by law, but you may be asked for one in individual cases. If you are, the certificate must have an apostille and a notarized Georgian translation.

How long is a police certificate valid?

That depends on the issuing country and the receiving authority. Many authorities ask for a recent certificate, so obtain it shortly before you travel and order the translation straight away.

How long does the translation take?

A standard document - the same or next day. For articles of association or a full corporate package, we agree a schedule based on the volume.

The Public Registry is running an additional check on my apostilled document. What should I do?

Since 2025, the Public Registry has been sending some foreign documents to the issuing authority for verification, which can take about 15 days. The translation does not speed this process up, so submit your documents as early as possible.

Do you speak English?

Yes. You can message us on WhatsApp in English or Russian. The translation itself is into Georgian, with notarial certification, as Georgian authorities require.
