A Somali interpreter is needed for personal, legal, education, medical and business documents where a word-for-word rendering is not enough. The parts of a Somali name often do not fit the European model of given name and surname; dropping one long vowel can change the official spelling; and certificates issued in different cities and administrations have different forms and details.
TARGMANEBI offers Somali into Georgian, Georgian into Somali, document formatting, data control and interpreting by arrangement. Where needed we explain whether notarization, authentication or consular legalisation should follow the translation. Our office is at 118 Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave, Tbilisi, and the first assessment can be done online from a clear scan or photo. For a quick estimate, send every page and tell us in which country, to which authority and for what purpose you are submitting it - these three facts set the direction, form and next steps.

Somali in documents: what we establish first
Article 5 of Somalia's Provisional Constitution names Somali as the official language of the Federal Republic, adding Maay and Maxaa-tiri in brackets, with Arabic as the second language. In practice this is a reminder that a "Somali" label does not always mean uniform text. Maay and Maxaa-tiri can differ in vocabulary, grammar and use, so the translator must identify the variant before ordering.
In modern official documents Somali is usually written in Latin script, but Arabic or English text may be added on the same page. A seal, heading or warning is sometimes in a different language from the main form. We check not only the main paragraphs but every field, side note, stamp, handwritten entry and annex. See Arabic interpreter.
The Latin orthography of Somali was officially adopted in 1972 - the European Union Agency for Asylum's 2025 Somalia report gives 21 October 1972 as the date the national orthography was codified. In document translation that date is only background; what matters is how modern spelling works. Somali Latin text may look like English, but the letter-sound correspondences differ. Long vowels are often written double - aa, ee, ii, oo, uu - which is not a stylistic choice: deleting one letter in a personal name, city or institution can separate the form from the passport, national ID or certificate.
Somali also uses letter combinations for specific sounds and an apostrophe that may have a phonetic function. We neither delete the apostrophe nor "correct" a double vowel out of Georgian or English habit. An official Latin spelling given clearly in the document stays unchanged; the Georgian form is fitted to the established transcription and the recipient's requirement.
Old or unusual script: historical material may contain Arabic-based writing or another Somali script. A page in Arabic letters is not automatically the Arabic language, nor modern Somali - the language and script must be identified separately by a specialist.
Somali names: own name, father's name, grandfather's name
According to HM Passport Office guidance for 2026, Somali names generally consist of the person's own name, the father's personal name and the paternal grandfather's personal name. This model usually has no European-type family surname, and Somali passports issued since 2006 present the three names in that order.
The rule matters in practice but must not be applied blindly. An online form may require a mandatory surname field; another country's authority may technically enter the third component as a "surname". The translator does not change the person's identity or divide names by guesswork - we rely on the passport, national ID, the document's own fields and the recipient's instructions. See passport translation.
One person's name may be spelled differently in Latin letters across Somali and Arabic documents, because of transliteration, double vowels, apostrophes or the use of only two components. A mismatch is never silently "corrected" in translation; we compare all the documents supplied and ask the client to confirm the form in the valid passport.
Name order
- Order of all three names checked
- Passport Latin form kept unchanged
- Two- and three-part entries compared
Spelling
- Double vowels and apostrophes controlled
- Arabic and Somali forms reconciled
- No surname assigned at will
Which Somali documents we translate
Somalia's National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) runs the national identification system created by a 2023 law. Its official information covers national and resident ID cards, digital identity, the identification certificate and the unique NIN number. From 1 September 2025 a national ID became mandatory for a Somali passport application, so 2026 documents include new digital and physical identity material.
The Consular Department of Somalia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially lists, for authentication, academic records, marriage and divorce certificates, birth and death documents, court acts, police certificates, powers of attorney, and medical, commercial, real estate, employment and financial documents. These groups also form the practical list of our translation service. See birth certificate translation.

Why the document's origin changes the approach
Somali-language text may come from a Somali federal body, a federal member state, the Somaliland administration, Somali-speaking settings in Djibouti, Ethiopia or Kenya, a diaspora organisation or a private act drawn up abroad. Their legal status, seals and verification routes are not the same.
We never assign a political or legal status in the text. The institution's name is carried over as in the original, with the Latin original kept where needed. It is especially important not to confuse "Somalia" and "Somaliland" forms, and to show the city, region and issuing authority in full. The recipient alone decides whether to accept the document and whether its authenticity is sufficient.
The 2026 GOV.UK operational profile notes that Somalia has no single central register of births, deaths and marriages, and document formats vary by place of issue. That does not make a given paper wrong; it means checking the form, the office and supporting material matters all the more.
Official Somali material may combine Somali, Arabic and English. If all three repeat the same thing, the translation shows the sequence clearly; if an Arabic seal or English note adds information, it is not dropped just because the main text is Somali. Signatures, seals, QR codes, fingerprints and photos are visual marks - the translation describes their presence and legible text but is not an authenticity examination. A faded or cropped passage is never filled in by guesswork: we ask for a better copy, and if none exists, the gap is noted.
Notarization, authentication and legalisation
Translation, notarization and international authentication are separate stages. Translation carries the content into Georgian or Somali. A notarial act in Georgia may concern the translator's signature or a copy. Authentication and legalisation concern the international use of a foreign public document's seal and signature. See notarization.
As of 28 August 2026 Somalia is not among the parties to the HCCH 1961 Apostille Convention, so an apostille cannot be treated as the automatic route for a document issued in Somalia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes a notarization and authentication service on its website, and the destination country may also require consular legalisation. The exact procedure must be confirmed by the issuing body, the Somali foreign ministry, the relevant consulate and the final recipient. TARGMANEBI is not a state body or a notary: we prepare the translation, can help arrange certification and advise getting the written requirement in advance. See apostille and legalization.
A Somali document may be needed in Georgia for residence, citizenship, family reunion, marriage, child registration, university admission, diploma recognition, employment, banking or a court case, and each process wants something different - a full Georgian translation with the original, a certified copy, or only an informational translation of certain pages. If the document is multilingual, check which part the recipient treats as the original: in a Somali-Arabic certificate the Latin form of a name may be in one field only and the seal text in Arabic, so translating only the main paragraph may not identify the person. We assess the file as a whole administrative unit, not page by page. For a Georgian document going into Somali, name the destination precisely - a Somali federal body, a regional administration, a Somaliland authority or a Somali organisation abroad may use different forms, while a company's registered name, the passport form of a name, numbers and codes stay unchanged.
Safe principle: first ask the receiving authority whether it will accept the specific document, what certification it wants and whether it needs the original. Then order the translation and the formal steps - that avoids extra cost and the wrong chain.
Interpreting, remote sessions and confidentiality
A Somali interpreter may be needed at a meeting, with a doctor or lawyer, when discussing a private contract or to explain a document's content. Interpreting differs from written translation: we need the date, duration, place, number of participants, subject and whether the procedure requires a specific qualification or physical presence. See interpreting.
Remote participation is technically possible by arrangement, but not every official act accepts a video call. If the interpreter must take part before a notary, a court or another authority, that body sets the attendance rules, and we do not promise a format that may later be refused.
Identity, medical, bank and family documents contain sensitive data. For assessment send only the pages needed, but do not crop the part with the issuing body, document number or seal; the full version must reach us by a secure channel before work starts. Client material is never used in public examples, and personal data is never published on this website.
How a Somali translation order runs
Full file
Every page, the back, annexes and seals as a clear photo or PDF.
Purpose
The country, authority, deadline and the language or certification it requires.
Check
We establish the language, name structure, volume, quality and complexity, then give price and deadline.
Preparation
Names, figures, dates, terms and format go through a final check.
Price, deadline and quality control
The price of a Somali document is not set by page count alone - one page may hold a small clear form or difficult handwriting, several languages and many tables. Word count, the Maay or Maxaa-tiri variant, subject, legibility, direction, urgency and certification all count. The price is by agreement, and urgent work is confirmed only after we see the file. A scan is often enough for the online estimate, but a notarial or other official act may require the original, an identity document or extra confirmation - we will tell you in advance. Photograph straight, without shadow or glare, with small print, stamps and handwritten fields especially sharp. See translation prices.
At final check names and figures are compared separately from the text: personal number, passport series, dates of birth and issue, amounts, validity and page order. If a name is spelled differently across documents, we record it before finishing and ask you to confirm the valid official form. Quality work includes editing and a final comparison, not just the first draft. You may mask unnecessary financial data for assessment, but an accurate translation needs the full, undamaged version.

Call: 501 113 200Frequently asked questions about Somali translation
Which part of a Somali name is the surname?
Somali names often consist of the person's name, the father's name and the grandfather's name, and there may be no European-type inherited surname. When filling in forms, the fields and order in the passport or official ID decide.
Why does a Somali name have two identical vowels?
In Somali Latin spelling a doubled vowel often marks a long sound and is part of the official spelling. Shortening it at will creates a mismatch with the passport form.
Are Maay and Maxaa-tiri one Somali language?
Somalia's Provisional Constitution names Somali as the official language and gives Maay and Maxaa-tiri in brackets. There are significant differences between them, so the variant is established before ordering.
Is Arabic text automatically Somali?
No. A Somali document may contain Arabic, English or Somali text. Visual similarity of script is not enough to identify the language; the page content and the issuing body must be checked.
Does a document issued in Somalia need an apostille?
As of 28 August 2026 Somalia is not listed as a party to the Apostille Convention, so authentication or consular legalisation may be needed. The final chain is set by the recipient and the competent authority.
Can I order a Somali translation online?
Yes. Send clear photos or a PDF of every page for assessment. If the original or an extra document is needed for certification, we will tell you in advance.
Must everything in a bilingual document be translated?
It depends on the recipient. The safe approach is to cover every important field, note and seal text, especially where the Somali, Arabic and English versions differ.
