Apostille on Your Georgian Marriage Certificate

Your certificate is issued in Georgian, on the day of the registration. To use it at home, it usually needs an apostille and a translation. Here is how the apostille works, how long the agency takes and which translation your country will accept.

Last reviewed 21 October 2026 against the Public Service Development Agency rules and the Hague Conference status table.

The basics

What the apostille does and who issues it

An apostille confirms that the signature and seal on a Georgian document are genuine and that the official who signed it had the authority to do so. It does not translate the document and it does not certify its content.

In Georgia

  • The apostille on a marriage certificate is issued by the Public Service Development Agency, the Ministry of Justice body that also registers marriages.
  • You apply at a Public Service Hall or a territorial office of the agency.
  • Anyone interested may apply, so we can file the application for you.
  • An apostille works only in countries that are parties to the 1961 Apostille Convention.
  • For other countries the document goes through consular legalization instead.

How it works

From the registration desk to your registry at home

The apostille goes on the original certificate. The translation comes after it, so that the apostille is translated too.

1
Registration day

Receive the certificate

The certificate is issued in Georgian after the registration. Before you leave the desk, our interpreter checks every name and date with you, because a typo has to be fixed before the apostille, not after.

2
Next

Apply for the apostille

We file the application at the Public Service Hall and choose the agency's term that fits your flight. If you have already left Georgia, the agency also offers a remote application by video call.

  • Original certificate, or a duly certified copy
  • Term chosen to match your schedule
  • Collected by us if you have flown home
3
Then

Translate for your country

We translate the certificate and the apostille into the language of your country, in the format your registry accepts, and send the full set to you by courier if needed. Our translation is ready the same or the next day.

The agency's terms

How long the apostille takes

These are the Public Service Development Agency's own service terms, not ours. You choose the term when you apply.

Standard term

The apostille is ready on the 8th working day after the application.

Faster terms

The agency also offers the 4th working day, the 2nd working day and the same day.

Remote or electronic

A remote application by video call, or an electronic apostille on an electronic document, is processed within 3 working days.

Working days exclude weekends and Georgian public holidays. If your flight is close, tell us the date and we will choose the term with you.

Translation

Which translation will your country accept?

This is the question that decides whether your certificate is accepted at home on the first visit, and the answer depends on the country. There is one rule in Georgia that shapes every option: the agency does not apostille notarial certifications of copies or translations. A notarized translation made in Georgia is therefore a separate document next to the apostilled original, not something that carries its own apostille.

Option 1: apostilled original plus our notarized translation

The most common route. The original certificate carries the apostille, and we translate the certificate and the apostille into your language, with the translation notarized in Tbilisi. Many registries and embassies accept this set. Our marriage certificate translation is ready the same or the next day.

Option 2: the agency's own translation

The Public Service Development Agency itself translates documents into English, Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Russian, German and Turkish, and it can apostille its own translation. This helps when a receiving office insists that the translation is covered by an apostille too.

Option 3: a sworn translator in your country

Some countries, or some offices within a country, accept only a translation by their own sworn or court-appointed translator. In that case you take the apostilled original home and have it translated there. We tell you in advance when your country is known to work this way, so that you do not pay for a translation you cannot use.

Send us the written requirements of your registry or embassy, if you have them. The wording almost always tells us which of the three options they expect.

Two countries, two sets

When each spouse registers the marriage in a different country, you need the certificate in two languages, sometimes in two formats. We prepare both sets from one review, with the names spelled identically. If one of the countries is not a party to the Convention, that set goes through legalization instead of the apostille.

Older certificates

If you married in Georgia years ago and hold an old-format certificate, ask us before you apply. A new certificate printed from the civil register is often the simpler starting point for an apostille, and we can help you request it.

No. The agency does not apostille notarial certifications of copies or translations. The apostille goes on the original certificate. If your country wants the translation covered too, the agency can translate the document itself into one of eight languages and apostille its translation.

If it is a party to the 1961 Apostille Convention, yes. That includes the EU, the UK, the USA, Israel, India, China, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Iran are not parties and require consular legalization instead.

After. The apostille goes on the original, and the translation then covers both the certificate and the apostille, which is what most registries abroad expect to see.

One apostille on the original certificate is usually enough, even if you need translations into two languages. If one of your countries requires legalization instead, that set needs a separate legalized certificate.

Our translation of the certificate and the apostille is ready the same or the next day. The apostille itself follows the agency's term, which we choose with you.
