Getting married in Georgia: how to plan the paperwork
Georgia attracts couples from Israel, India, Iran, Lebanon, the Gulf, Russia and Europe because a civil marriage can be registered here without residence and without long waiting periods. The legal part is a short administrative procedure. What decides whether it runs smoothly is the paperwork you bring and the order in which it is prepared.
Start with the documents that can only be fixed at home
Anything issued abroad, other than your passport, needs an apostille or a consular legalization from the country that issued it. That step cannot be done in Tbilisi. If one of you is divorced, the divorce decree is the document to check first: without its apostille, the registration cannot go ahead. This is why our online audit comes before anything else. You send scans, and by the same or the next day you know which papers are complete and which must be finished before you travel. Our document checklist lists every item.
Translate once, spell names once
A Georgian marriage record copies your names from the documents you present. If the passport translation, the divorce decree translation and the witness documents spell a name in three different ways, the registrar will stop and ask why. We fix the spelling of every name at the start and use it in every document, including the later translation of your marriage certificate, so the record and its translation always match.
Plan the ceremony day around the interpreter
The procedure is conducted in Georgian. If neither of you speaks the language, an interpreter makes sure you understand the application and the record before you sign. Our interpreters attend registrations regularly, know the questions the registrar asks, and check the printed details with you before your signatures go on the record. Many couples register and receive their certificate on the same day, but we always recommend keeping a spare day in your travel plan.
Think about recognition before the wedding, not after
Your marriage certificate is issued in Georgian. To register the marriage in your home country, you will usually need an apostille on the certificate and a translation into your language. Countries outside the Apostille Convention, such as the UAE and Qatar, require consular legalization instead. Some countries also want the translation made by their own sworn translator. Tell us your country at the audit stage and we will plan the right format, so you do not find out about an extra requirement at your registry office back home.
If you leave before the apostille is ready
The Public Service Development Agency issues the apostille on the 8th working day as standard, with faster terms down to the same day. If your flight leaves first, a power of attorney signed before a Georgian notary lets us collect the apostille and any duplicates for you and courier the full set to your address.
