Finnish translation is not word substitution. Personal data, dates, register entries, legal terms, administrative names and the document's function must all come across exactly. Common Finland-related documents include passports, birth and marriage certificates, family status certificates, residence extracts, employment contracts, income confirmations, tax documents, medical reports, diplomas, transcripts, company extracts and state decisions.
When ordering, send the whole page, not just the main text - headings, seals, signatures, codes, attachments and the back if it carries information. That reduces the risk of omissions and later corrections.
Professional Finnish translation
We serve individuals, companies, lawyers, educational institutions and clinics. Style follows purpose: administrative documents keep an official tone, medical material its professional terminology, business text a clear working form.
Finnish differs structurally from Georgian and Indo-European languages. Meaning is often carried by endings, case forms and long compounds, so one Finnish word may become a whole Georgian phrase, and a Georgian administrative formula may need several carefully chosen Finnish terms. In official translation, context matters more than a word's dictionary equivalent; on first use the full Georgian equivalent is given, with the Finnish original in brackets where helpful.

Finnish features that affect translation
Finnish official texts use long compounds, abbreviations and institutional terms - one name may describe an agency, a service and a legal function at once, and splitting it superficially can change the meaning. The letters ä, ö and å can be legally significant in names, addresses, municipalities and institutions; losing or replacing them creates mismatches between passport, register and application. Personal names follow the Latin entry in the identity document, not a pronunciation established in Georgian.
Official documents may be in Finnish, Swedish or both. If a page carries both languages, we never assume the texts are identical - headings, notes, seals and legal references may differ in part. So we look at the full page and decide which text goes into the final translation.
Translation for Finnish state agencies
Finnish administration is largely digital, yet foreign documents may still need translation, certification or legalization, and a format accepted by one agency is not automatically enough for another. DVV (Digital and Population Data Services Agency) - personal data, residence, family status, family relationships and population register certificates. Migri / Enter Finland - residence permits, family reunification, work, study, income, marriage and birth, matched to each application's attachment list.
Kela / OmaKela - social benefits, health care, family and housing circumstances, income and employment, where social and medical terms must be unambiguous and dates and periods exact. Vero / MyTax - tax cards, tax certificates, income, debt, tax residency and business information. Finnish National Agency for Education - diplomas, transcripts, curricula, qualifications and professional experience. PRH / Virre - Trade Register extracts, articles, company status, directors, authority and financial documents.DVV certificates and the virkatodistus
DVV runs many services linked to the Population Information System: certificates of personal data, residence, family status, family relationships, examination of impediments to marriage and other register entries. In Georgian the exact type of certificate matters as much as the data. DVV explains that virkatodistus is a general name for a population register extract or certificate containing personal or family data - a certificate of life, a family relations report or another extract - so translating it automatically as "birth certificate" or "residence certificate" is wrong if its content is wider.
Through DVV self-service, Population Information System certificates can be ordered in Finnish, Swedish or English, and a Finnish or Swedish certificate may carry an EU multilingual form. That form is a translation aid within the EU and does not mean the document is automatically accepted in Georgia without a Georgian translation or apostille. An electronic DVV certificate may have no signature; DVV says its authenticity can be checked with the 32-character identifier at the bottom, which is copied unchanged - losing one character would break validation. The certificate on impediments to marriage is issued electronically with its own validation page, so send the downloaded PDF, not part of a phone screen.
Documents for Migri and Enter Finland
The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) decides residence permits and other immigration matters on grounds such as work, study, family ties or entrepreneurship, each with its own list of attachments. Commonly translated are marriage or birth certificates, employer certificates, employment contracts, proof of income, education documents, guardianship papers and explanation letters.
Material for Enter Finland must be clear, complete and correctly named; in a multi-page PDF the pages follow a logical order and the translation shows which original page each text belongs to. Omitting an apostille, extra stamp or back-side entry can trigger a request for more information. Language, apostille and translation status requirements vary by procedure, so check the official instructions for your specific application.
Authorised translation in Finland and Georgian notarization
In Finland, authorised translation is a legally defined status. The register of authorised translators is kept by the Finnish National Agency for Education, and a legally valid authorised translation must be made by a translator with that right. Notarization of a translator's signature in Georgia is a different legal procedure and does not automatically equal the Finnish status.
Migri's rules state that attachments in languages other than Finnish, Swedish or English must be translated by an authorised translator or a translator officially recognised in another EU member state; if the translator is not authorised, Migri points to the need to legalize the translation. So simply putting a Georgian document into English or Finnish is not the whole answer - the translation's status matters too. The Finnish National Agency for Education also explains that a stamp is not a mandatory mark of legal validity; what matters is the certification formula and the translator's signature. If a Finnish recipient asks for an authorised translation, send us the requirement first, so a Georgian notarized form is never presented as its equivalent.
An apostille confirms the authority of the signatory or the official origin of a public document; it does not confirm the facts or the translation. A DVV public notary can apostille Finnish documents for use in Convention countries. The safe order: get the recipient's written requirement, establish whether an apostille is needed, then prepare the full translation including the apostille itself.
Kela, Vero and company documents
Kela, the Social Insurance Institution, deals with housing, family, health, employment and social security. Foreign documents may show family composition, a child's birth, guardianship, income, work, study status or treatment - facts that affect entitlement and the amount of benefits. Periods must be exact: start and end of work, income period, date of moving, length of treatment. Amounts and currency are carried over as in the original, never recalculated.
Vero (Finnish Tax Administration) documents concern individuals, employers, self-employed people or companies: tax residence certificates, income confirmations, tax debt information, decisions, tax cards and return extracts. "Assessed", "paid", "taxable", "withheld" and "outstanding" amounts are different concepts, and calendar year, tax year, reporting period and date of effect are kept apart. PRH Trade Register extracts via Virre show the company name, Business ID, legal form, registered address, line of business, directors, board members and signatories; Oy, Oyj, toiminimi and other forms are explained without being artificially equated with a Georgian legal form. See registry extract translation.
Education, legal and medical Finnish
Education. For study, admission or qualification assessment in Finland, the recipient may need length of study, credits, subjects, grading, practice hours and the legal meaning of the qualification, not just the diploma title. The Finnish National Agency for Education or a university may set the translation form strictly, so attach the requirement page or letter. Subject names are rendered in the context of programme, faculty and credits. Legal. Rights, obligations, permissions, prohibitions and conditions are kept apart; a contract is never "polished" or simplified, and clause numbers, annexes and references follow the source. In court or administrative decisions the appeal period, entry into force and competent body matter. See legal translation. Medical. Diagnosis, complaints, tests, treatment, drug name, dose, frequency and recommendation are checked; Finnish medical abbreviations are verified in context, and illegible handwriting is never invented. Call: 501 113 200Frequently asked questions about Finnish translation
Does Migri accept a Georgian document with an English translation?
Under Migri's rules, attachments must be in Finnish, Swedish or English. A document in another language needs an authorised translation; if the translator is not authorised, Migri points to legalization of the translation. Also check the original and apostille requirements.
What exactly does virkatodistus mean in a DVV document?
DVV describes it as the general name for a population register extract or certificate with personal or family data - a certificate of life, family relations report or other extract. The right Georgian title follows the actual content.
What is the 32-character code on an electronic DVV certificate for?
It helps an authorised party verify the certificate's authenticity. The code is copied unchanged; the translation does not replace DVV's official validation.
Is DVV's EU multilingual form enough in Georgia?
Not automatically. It is attached to a Finnish or Swedish certificate as a translation aid within the EU. Georgia is not an EU member, so the Georgian recipient decides on the apostille and Georgian translation.
Who issues an apostille on a Finnish public document?
A DVV public notary can apostille a document issued by a Finnish authority or relevant person for use in a Hague Convention state. First check the document category and whether it is subject to apostille.
Must a Finnish authorised translation have a stamp?
According to the Finnish National Agency for Education, a stamp is not legally mandatory; an authorised translation needs the translator's certification formula and signature. A Georgian notarization does not automatically equal that status.
Are both parts of a bilingual Finnish-Swedish document translated?
Always send the full page. If the parts are identical, the final scope follows the recipient's requirement; a differing heading, note, seal or data point is never omitted.
