A translation bureau for Ambrolauri - TARGMANEBI's service for a municipality where one word - Khvanchkara - is a legally protected name and every bottle has to be backed by documents. The micro-zone's wineries, large and family-run alike, have in recent years been entering European, Asian and American markets, and on top of the usual export package they need one extra layer: documents confirming and protecting the appellation of origin, which tell the importer, the regulator and, where necessary, a court that this bottle is genuine.
Racha's second flow is historical: Rachan craftsmen and traders have lived in Russian cities for more than a century, and the new generation has left for Europe. Ambrolauri families have relatives in Moscow, Sochi, Saint Petersburg, Athens and Milan, and inheritance, property, pensions and kinship between two or three countries are all governed by documents. The third is tourism: winery tastings, Nikortsminda, Lake Shaori, family guesthouses. Tbilisi is four hours from Ambrolauri and Kutaisi two, and nobody from Racha can make that trip every time a bottle needs a document - so a Khvanchkara winery's invoice and a power of attorney from Moscow both start the same way, on a phone, and end with a courier.
Khvanchkara abroad - export and appellation protection
Khvanchkara exports come with two sets of documents: those any wine needs, and those only a wine with a protected name needs:
Standard export package
- Contract with an importer or distributor
- Invoice, packing list and transport documents
- Certificate of origin and customs declaration
- Laboratory analysis report and health certificate
- Front and back label text to the target market's requirements
For the appellation of origin
- National Wine Agency certificate of the right to the micro-zone name
- Vineyard registration and harvest records
- Conformity report against the production specification
- Extract from the international register of protected names
- The importer's regulator questionnaires on authenticity
Fighting counterfeits
- A claim to a foreign platform or shop over a fake bottle
- A trademark registration application to a foreign authority
- An expert report on authenticity for a court
- Correspondence with a foreign lawyer and customs
- A public statement and press release in the target market's language
Translating appellation of origin documents calls for the terminology of international wine law: "protected designation of origin", "micro-zone", "production specification", "varietal composition" - these terms have established equivalents with the regulators of the EU, China and the US, and a word-for-word translation robs the document of its force. The names of the micro-zone's villages, vineyards and grape varieties are written in one transliteration from the label to a court report - that is exactly why a terminology base is created for each winery.
The Racha diaspora - Russia and Europe
A Rachan family's documents are often spread over three countries: the grandfather's house in Ambrolauri, the father's flat in a Russian city, the son's residence permit in Europe. An inheritance, a division of property or a pension case brings all three together - Russian notarial deeds, a renunciation of inheritance or a power of attorney from Russia, a Georgian registry extract and a death certificate for a Russian or European authority, a Soviet employment record book for a Georgian pension, documents from the Russian pension fund. Whether documents from Russia need an apostille or consular legalisation depends on the type of document and the rules in force - we establish which form your case needs before you order. The European direction is routine: certificates, statements, apostille, notarized translation.
Winery tourism and Nikortsminda
Khvanchkara wineries offer tastings and wine tours, Nikortsminda and Lake Shaori draw foreign travellers, and Ambrolauri's family guesthouses fill up in summer. A winery's history, tasting notes, a wine tour programme, a guesthouse page on a booking platform, a wine list, a contract with a tour operator - all of this is translated into guests' languages, with no stamp and no notary. Tasting notes have to sound like a sommelier wrote them, while a historical text on Nikortsminda has to match the scholarly literature - each is prepared by a translator with the right style.
Ambrolauri families today
Beyond the diaspora, Racha families also need present-day papers: a child is enrolling at a university in Kutaisi or in Europe, a spouse works in Italy, a grandmother is retiring, a vineyard is being sold under a power of attorney from a brother abroad. These papers travel back to Ambrolauri with the same courier as the winery's invoice and the Russian inheritance deed - or to Kutaisi, for those who have to be there.
Languages in orders from Ambrolauri
Because of the diaspora and traditional markets, Russian leads in Ambrolauri in both directions; exports need English, Chinese, Polish and Ukrainian, and European distributors German, French and Dutch. In family documents going to Europe we see Italian, Greek and Spanish; Turkish, Arabic and Czech are rare from Ambrolauri.
The process for wineries and families
A file or a photo
Export documents and the label layout in an editable format, by email to info@targmanebi.ge; a Russian deed or certificate as photos of every page by WhatsApp, including the apostille or legalisation page.
Market, authority, deadline
Which country's importer or authority, and when the shipment leaves or the deadline closes. For a Russian document, tell us whether it has an apostille - we settle this before you order.
Wine law and the family table
Appellation documents are translated by a legal translator who knows wine terminology, diaspora papers by a Russian-language specialist with a table of names; figures and micro-zone names are checked with an editor.
Delivery in Ambrolauri or Kutaisi
You receive the file straight away. The courier brings the paper original to Ambrolauri; anyone going to Kutaisi anyway can collect it there, and if you are in Tbilisi we will be waiting at the office.
Price and deadlines
An order from Ambrolauri is priced as in Tbilisi; the price is by agreement and is set after we see the document. The courier to Racha is a separate item known in advance, paid once when several documents are sent together. An export invoice and certificate are ready the same day, a label and appellation documents in two to three days, a Russian notarial deed into Georgian with notarization in two to three days, a full inheritance package in one to two weeks, and tourism material before the season. Wineries have a terminology base, templates and a monthly invoice; updating a label for the next harvest is charged only for the fields that changed. Appellation documents are signed off by a lawyer - Mariam Zumadze, sole trader (ID 30601010853), who owns TARGMANEBI and for whom a protected name is a legal institution; any error by her team is corrected free of charge.
For Racha wineries we have one further offer: an authenticity package prepared once - the Agency certificate, the registry extract, the vineyard registration - is kept in English in our database, and for each new importer only the invoice and the label are added. That way a Khvanchkara winery entering a new market does not have to start proving authenticity from scratch.
Sending Khvanchkara to a new market and the importer wants proof of authenticity? Spotted a fake bottle on a foreign platform? A power of attorney arrived from your uncle in Moscow? Send us the file or a photo from Ambrolauri - we have both the wine law and the table of Rachan surnames.

A Chinese importer wants "authenticity" documents for our Khvanchkara. Which documents are those?
Chinese importers usually ask for four documents: the National Wine Agency certificate of the right to the micro-zone name, the vineyard registration extract, the laboratory report and the extract from the register of protected names. Everything is prepared in Chinese with the bureau stamp; a notary is needed only if the importer's questionnaire says so explicitly - send us the questionnaire.
Will the courier come to Ambrolauri, or do I need to go to Kutaisi?
The courier comes to Ambrolauri on an agreed day; in Kutaisi the original is collected by those who have business there anyway. A winery's export documents often need no paper at all - the file is enough for both the importer and customs, and the original travels only for an apostille.
I found fake Khvanchkara in a European online shop. In what language and form do I file a claim?
In the platform's language or in English - backed by your appellation rights documents and an expert report or a comparison of the labels. The claim is prepared by a legal translator; if the matter goes on to a foreign lawyer or customs, we continue the correspondence in the same terminology.
My uncle died in Moscow and left a house in Ambrolauri. Do the Russian documents need an apostille?
How Russian documents are recognised in Georgia - by apostille or consular legalisation - depends on the type of document and the rules in force, and we establish this before you order. The Georgian translation is notarized; we handle the inheritance case as one package with a single table of surnames.
I am sending Khvanchkara to a European competition. How long does an English technical sheet take?
One to two working days - varietal composition, micro-zone, alcohol, sugar and acidity checked figure by figure against the original, and the protected name in the terms of international wine law. The following year only the harvest data needs translating.
My mother's employment record book is in Russian, with the stamp of an enterprise in Sochi. Will it work for her pension?
Yes - with a notarized Georgian translation that covers every completed page and describes the enterprise stamps. We decipher the handwritten entries first and give the price after that; the name is written to match the Georgian ID card, with the Russian form kept in a note.
