A translation bureau in Dmanisi - TARGMANEBI's service for a municipality where an international scientific season begins in summer, while the rest of the year runs on ordinary village life. A place like this demands flexibility from a bureau: one week it may be expedition contracts and safety instructions, the next a grandmother's pension certificate or a child's school papers. Our process works the same way for both and is fully remote, with the courier handling paper delivery. Dmanisi is more than two hours from Tbilisi, so this scheme has proved the most practical one for local people.
Archaeological expeditions and research
Fieldwork creates a whole layer of administrative and legal documents, which often have to exist in two languages:
Organising the expedition
- Cooperation agreements with foreign universities
- Documents related to fieldwork permits
- Volunteer and student agreements and consent forms
- Safety rules and field camp instructions
- Insurance terms and medical questionnaires
Scientific material
- Research reports and excerpts from field diaries
- Laboratory and dating analysis reports
- Translation of articles and abstracts
- Presentations and posters for conferences
- Grant applications and interim reports
Museum and the public
- Exhibition texts and labels in visitors' languages
- Guide material and audio guide scripts
- Information boards on the site
- Documents for exhibitions and temporary loans of objects
- Educational programmes for schools
Terminology in an archaeological text is as strict as in any other field: the names of layers, periods, materials and methods have to be carried across in their established form, while inventory numbers and coordinates of objects stay unchanged. So we start work by agreeing the terms and, where there is doubt, we ask the author or the expedition leader. Unpublished scientific material is especially closed information for us - we also put that in a contract if the partner needs it.
Foreign visitors, researchers, volunteers
The foreigners who come to Dmanisi every season create a separate stream of documents. On the one hand they need Georgian documents translated - an accommodation contract, medical certificates, invoices for services received; on the other, the Georgian side needs Georgian versions of their papers - passports, proof of qualifications, insurance policies. If someone stays longer or starts working, a residence and work permit package is added, which requires notarization and often an apostille. In a medical case - and injuries are not rare in the field season - the clinic's documents are translated urgently for the foreign insurance company. We handle such orders out of turn, because the person is usually still in the country and time is limited.
Sheep farming, pastures, agriculture
The mountain pastures of Dmanisi form a traditional sheep farming zone, and in recent years the sector has moved more actively into foreign markets. Exporting sheep and meat requires veterinary certificates, animal identification and registration records, supply contracts and customs documents - all in the language of the importing country. On the import side it is the other way round: instructions for feed additives, vaccines, disinfectants and machinery are translated into Georgian so the farm uses them correctly. A separate group is grant and advisory projects on sheep farming development, pasture management or milk processing - here applications and reports are prepared in English. For small farms we offer a set prepared once, which afterwards only needs its data updated.
Family papers and relatives who have gone abroad
Many family members from the villages of Dmanisi work abroad, and a significant share of our orders comes from here. These are employment contracts and invitations, whose Georgian version is needed before signing; health and criminal record certificates for a work visa; powers of attorney when someone who has left needs a matter settled here; consents for a child's travel; study documents for students. After people return it goes the other way - certificates of service and taxes earned there are translated into Georgian. For such cases we have one practical tip: if you know you will need several documents, send them together - that way the spelling of names is settled at once, the courier comes once, and the total cost is lower than with separate requests.
For mountain villages internet and connection are a separate practical question. If sending photos is difficult or the file is large, call us - we will agree how you can get the material to us: through a relative in Tbilisi, by courier or in stages, over several messages. We have had cases where a document arrived as separate pages over several days and was still handled as one case. The main thing is that the photo is sharp and the whole page is visible, including edges and stamps.
Languages in orders from Dmanisi
In the scientific and expedition part English is the main language, while with European partners German and French are frequent, as are Spanish and Italian. Russian appears in older scientific material and regional trade, Turkish in exports and machinery, Arabic in the direction of meat markets. Family papers often involve Greek, Polish, Czech and Ukrainian; Dutch and Chinese are available as well.
The process from Dmanisi
A document or text
A photo by WhatsApp to 501 113 200; scientific and museum material preferably as an editable file to info@targmanebi.ge.
Clarifying the purpose
An internal expedition document, a paper to be submitted to an authority or a text meant for visitors - we choose the style and form of certification accordingly.
Terms and execution
For a specialised text we agree a list of terms with you, then translation and editing follow; numbers, dates and proper names are checked separately.
Receiving it
The electronic version straight away, certified paper by courier to Dmanisi or, if you prefer, from the Tbilisi office.
Price, deadlines and confidentiality
Dmanisi is charged on the Tbilisi basis - we add no surcharge for a mountain municipality, and the price is always by agreement, confirmed after we see the document. A one-page certificate is done the same day, a notarized personal document in two days, a volunteer and visitor package in two to three days, a veterinary certificate with the bureau stamp the same or the next working day, museum texts depending on volume, a scientific article in three to seven days, and an apostilled document within the timeframe of the procedure. In the field season urgent orders, especially medical and insurance ones, are handled out of turn. Unpublished research, internal expedition material and personal documents are protected information for us. The bureau is headed by Mariam Zumadze, registered as a sole trader (ID 30601010853); settlement with a university, a museum or a grant project therefore runs on fully official documents. If an error of ours is confirmed, the correction is free.
Is the expedition season starting and you need contracts, consents and instructions in two languages? Preparing new texts for the museum? A batch of sheep going for export? Write to us from Dmanisi - you will get a quick answer.

A foreign university is proposing an agreement on a joint expedition. Should we sign it in two languages?
Yes, that is the best option - both languages in one file, with the articles matching exactly, so that both sides read the same terms when signing. We pay special attention to the clauses on participants' liability, ownership of the material and publication rights, because those are the ones that tend to become contentious later.
Volunteers come from different countries. Are consent and safety forms translated?
Yes - the consent form, safety rules, camp rules and medical questionnaire in each participant's language. We recommend preparing a complete set once; after that only dates and names change each season.
There is very little space on the museum labels.
That is exactly why we prepare several versions of different lengths - a long one for the catalogue, a short one for the label and a very short one for the board. The factual content stays the same in every version; only the level of detail changes.
We are preparing sheep for export. Which documents will we need translated?
Usually the veterinary certificate, animal registration records, the supply contract and commercial documents in the language of the importing country. The bureau stamp is enough for the commercial part; official certificates may need a notary or an apostille, depending on the requirements.
A foreign researcher was injured and the insurance company is asking for documents.
We translate the clinic's documents - the discharge summary, test results, the cost statement - urgently into the insurer's language, usually within one or two days. A medical text is handled by a translator in that field, and the patient's data stays confidential.
Does the courier come to Dmanisi, or will I have to travel to Tbilisi?
The courier comes to Dmanisi regularly - we will tell you the exact day when you order. You only need to come to Tbilisi if you prefer to collect at the office yourself; every other stage is completed remotely.
